The problem and context

A café and restaurant wanted a menu that looks like its brand, works in English and Arabic, and can be kept current by its own staff without a developer.

What was built

  • English and Arabic menus, with Arabic right-to-left layout and Arabic type
  • Photo-led category pages with sticky previous/next navigation
  • Staff admin for categories, dishes, prices, Arabic names and photo uploads
  • Photos optimised at upload and stored in R2
  • Server-rendered pages with no first-party client JavaScript

How it works

  1. Guest scans the venue QR and lands on the menu home.
  2. Photographic category tiles lead into each section; a sticky bar moves to the previous or next category.
  3. Guests can switch between English and Arabic on any page.
  4. Staff sign in to edit categories, dishes, prices, Arabic text and photos.

How the system fits together

  • Hono renders JSX on one Cloudflare Worker; navigation uses links and CSS rather than first-party client JavaScript.
  • Cloudflare D1 stores menu records, with separate Arabic name, tagline and description fields that fall back to English when empty.
  • R2 stores photos; Cloudflare Images optimises uploads.
  • Server-side validation and login rate limiting guard the staff interface.

  • Built on the same engineering as the Ō Lounge menu, with a new design from the client’s mockup.

Scope and operating limits

  • Prices are in EGP; it is a browsing menu, not an ordering or payment system.
  • Illustrative placeholder photography is disclosed on the menu until replaced with real venue photos.
